Virtual Wine Tasting Saluti! Liguria, Italy, 1-2021

Another Saturday night happily traveling to Italy via another virtual wine tasting hosted by @Wolf’s Weindepot. This time the winery chosen was @Tenuta Maffone, a family run vineyard in the upper Arroscia Valley in Liguria, Italy. We were lucky to have the vintner and owner Bruno share his vast knowledge of the wines and the region with our Austrian group. We tasted 2 white wines made from the “Vermentino” and the “Pigato” white grape. We began with a “Vermentino doc Riviera Ligure di Ponente”, then moved onto a “Pigato Superiore Giuanó”. Both were straw yellow and were “pleasantly dry, with good body and persistence.” Next we tried the “Granaccia doc Ligagna” made from the “Granaccia” ruby red grape that had “warm soft hints of red fruits and violets” and is cultivated at 400 meters above sea level. And lastly, we tasted the ruby red “Ormeasco di Pornassio” made from the Ormeasco grape cultivated over 500 meters. This was my favorite wine of the evening with “hints of cherry and wild berries” and it was lovely. A simple meal of tomato bruschetta, egg salad topped with salmon, brown bread, and apple slices from our garden harvest went well with the Ligurian selections. Saluti!
